Why Blog?

I’ve been asked why anyone bothers ‘blogging’, and heard on multiple occasions “I just don’t get blogs”. For a long time I didn’t either. Blogs take so many forms, and vary so much in quality that it can be hard to know what’s worth reading.

But the concept of blogs really go right back to the beginnings of the web. “Blog” is a blend of the term web log, and they typically take the form of an individual or organisation regularly posting new content to a website, with the most recent post displayed first. The original web was, and largely still is, all about sharing ideas – putting stuff out there which interested parties can access. Popular blog sites such as wordpress.com (the host for this site) allow anyone to put any content they like into the public arena.

Blogs exist for the reader. The successful blogs are written by people who are in a unique position to comment on one particular subject area. They are typically opinionated, informative and educational. Read the rest of this entry

Blog topic suggestions

So I have great plans to start this blog, but unfortunately with the combination of uni, work and married life it looks as though I won’t have a chance to really get into it until next year. I’m going to use this blog post to keep a record of ideas I have for topics to blog about in the future. Feel free to sign up for notifications for this blog, but unfortunately I can’t guarantee I’ll start posting any time soon!

Future topics ideas…

  • Why blog?
  • What you’d think of Christians if you’d never met one
  • Why get married young
  • Consumerism with technology
  • Why Christians avoid sex before marriage
  • The role of technology in churches
  • What’s the point of a “youth group”
  • Our responsibility in the climate change debate
  • Lives lived online – good or bad?

I welcome any suggestions for topics to post on!

Also, my wife Alison runs a great blog entitled Stewing over Science, which aims to communicate interesting and informative science snippets in a highly accessible format. I recommend it!
